Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)
Through Sunday, April 15
Art Parkway District
This major exhibition of African-American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner is quintessentially PAFA and celebrates a key figure in Philadelphia's art history. Modern Spirit contains over 100 works, including 12 paintings that have never been shown in a Tanner retrospective and the only two known sculptures that Tanner completed. The exhibition also includes Tanner's famed Resurrection of Lazarus, from the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, a career-making canvas that earned Tanner his first international praise when it was exhibited in 1897 and which has never crossed the Atlantic.

Painterly voice is a little overwhelming. There are so many important works in the permanent collection that I think it's OK to just skim the exhibition.

AC is an underrated place to see dance. I think the venue is just about the right size.

Craftforms sort of stretches the limits of what can be considered crafts, not that I'm complaining. Very different in focus from the Art Museum craft show. This is an art exhibition and it is a good one.

New exhibits are wonderful. Honestly the free admission changes the way I approach visiting, instead of setting aside two hours to see everything I can stop by whenever I'm in the area - a couple of times a week or whatever - to see whatever I have time for.
